Lee Joongi almost looks like a man now

Yay! Joongi sort of looks like a man now – a scary looking one if I may. Korea’s prettiest boy has been working hard to become Korea’s hottest man and to my delight, he’s somewhat successful in shedding his pretty boy image with his new haircut and weight loss – 7 kgs to be exact. And I’m sure that his new manly role in the drama Times of Dog and Wolves will lock in the new image for sure. Unless well, he plays a wimpy bodyguard who gets beat up all the time. Haha, just kidding. Actually, Lee Joongi plays a secret agent who experiences memory loss, causing him to turn into a malicious killer. And it’s reported that Lee Jun Ki will change his hair style once again after he joins the mafia. I bet you that he’ll get a buzz cut to look like a gangsta.

Anyways, good news to Joongi’s Thai fans. The main location for the new drama is in Thailand, so he’s expected to spend at least a month there and he’s flying over there on the 15th of this month. Times of Dog and Wolves will air on MBC sometime in July. I can’t wait to see the new manly Joongi.

What horrible timing following Choi Jin-shil’s shocking death, because now it’s hard to get that excited about news I/we have been waiting forever to hear, which is the announcement of the “F4″ guys in the Korean Hana Yori Dango, aka Boys Before Flowers.

Although it was floated around that the casting would comprise mostly pop idol stars, it turns out (for the better, imo), that we’re split half-half between idols and actors (the two rising actors at least have a decent amount of experience — for their age, I mean).

• First is F4 leader in the Tsukasa role, aka actor Lee Min-ho (above left).
• Kim Hyun-joong, idol singer of pop boy band SS501, takes on the role of Rui.
• Kim Bum (!!!), at above right, is most recently of East of Eden and the biggest surprise for me — and a pleasant one at that, since he’s proved he can act. He’s Soujiro.
• And, finally, Kim Joon is the least-known of the F4 boys, as Akira.

Lee Min-ho takes the lead as “Doumyouji Tsukasa,” renamed for the drama as “Gu Jun-pyo”:

Lee Min-ho, born in 1987, has a decent amount of work behind him, having done several TV shows and a couple films, including I Don’t Know Either, Run! Mackerel, Public Enemy Returns, and the recent Our School E.T.

A least they gave Doumyouji to a “real” actor instead of the crossover newbie in his acting debut. Not that that’s bad (we all have to start somewhere?) but considering that he’s the most crucial F4 role, he’d damn well better know how to act.


Kim Hyun-joong takes the character of “Hanazawa Rui,” renamed “Yoon Ji-hoo”:

Kim Hyun-joong, a 1986-er of boy band SS501, is currently paired with Hwang Bo on variety show We Got Married, and was the first name to be floated around earlier this summer. He’s taking over the role following Oguri Shun’s excellent portrayal — that’ll be an uphill climb, particularly given that the boy doesn’t have a lot of acting experience. It appears he was cast because he fits the image; we’ll see if his skills measure up.


Kim Bum is cast in the “Nishikada Soujiro” role, renamed “So Yi-jung”:

I’m a bit disappointed that Kim Bum, the young’un of the bunch (a 1989-er), is being used in a lesser capacity here, although since the series is set for 24 episodes, hopefully Soujiro’s and Akira’s roles are given more attention than as mere sidemen for Tsukasa and Rui. I also hope he’s given a chance to expand on his recently demonstrated melo acting skills. Hey, at least Soujiro was given a bit of a “deeper” story line than Akira in the J-version, yeah? What I’m saying is: You’ve got this budding “serious” actor, so don’t waste him.

As the guy I’m least familiar with (as in, not at all), this is the best pic I could get; Kim Joon (full real name Kim Hyung-joon, a 1985-er) is the guy on the right. And when I say “newb,” I mean this is his acting debut. He is, however, a member of the newish pop boy band T-Max

Below are the leads of 4 versions of F4. First column are the manga characters, 2nd column are the Korean F4, 3rd are the Taiwanese F4 and the last column are the Japanese F4. Amongst the characters played that i've seen, the character and personality of Ji Hoo/Huatzelei/Rui is the most consistent. To be honest, i'm quite a fan of the guys in the 2nd row. ^^

The Taiwanese and Japanese version are both successful in their homeland as well as abroad. Stars of the hit drama have become very popular. Currently, the Korea version is making a big wave not only in Korea but in other countries as well. No need to ask why, I guess you’ve already guessed it. It is because of these 4 handsome actors who is making the Monday and Tuesday night enjoyable to all fangirls.

Kim Hyun Joon, the leader of the boyband SS501 has some similarities with Bae Yong Joon. Even his partner in We Got Married, Hwang Bo said on TV that he is like Bae Yong Joon. He got chosen for the role not only because of his overall image, but also his height, which matched original character Rui's.

To get the role of Gu Jun Pyo, Lee Min Ho has to audition. Below is LMH sans the curly hair. Prior to BOF, he only appeared in several minor shows. After the first episode of BOF, LMH is all over Korea. LMH who had to show off curlyhair as the main character, went through four perms to get the right look of Jun Pyo. Btw, in one Korean article earlier, it was written there that LMH is 'Little Bae Yong Joon'. His career in Japan is being managed by IMX, Yong Joon's former agency before BOFi was create.

Kim Jun is the 'least popular' amongst the Korean F4. He is from another boyband T-Max. After being casted in BOF and photos of him circulating, some branded him as the next Jang Dong Gun. With a handsome face, big deep eyes and natural nose, netizens are are saying that he has gone under the knife. Kim Joon has gotten over the controversy of having plastic surgery, and has proved that he is naturally handsome and more popular.

Kim Bum, the youngest amongst the four is the most experienced one in terms of acting. He debuted in 2006 and had already five dramas under his name [including BOF]. His role in East of Eden as the young Song Seung Hun was highly praised. Over the past 3 weeks, Kim Bum was involved in 2 car accidents.

Boys oVer Flowers

Not only is KBS Boys Before Flowers highly popular among television viewers in Korea as shown by the high ratings it has obtained, it is the same situation for viewers outside of Korea who are relying on video sharing websites like Youtube.com to be on the same page with their Korean counterparts.

But videos uploaded onto video sharing websites are not authorized in anyway by KBS. KBS and Group Eight have been working with Youtube to remove the copyrighted material in terms of picture slideshows and videos pertaining to Boys Before Flowers but are increasingly fighting a losing battle.

If you do a simple search or just view the video rankings, you would have noticed that videos of Boys Before Flowers are simply dominating the charts on Youtube. 1 particular cut of episode 10 has yielded an impressive viewcount of 160,004 hits after just 3 days. Similarly, videos of Boys Before Flowers are also dominating the monthly charts in addition to the weekly and daily charts. Many non-korean viewers are highly interested especially in videos that has english subtitles. Other than 1 So Nyeo Shi Dae Gee MV, all other videos belong to Boys Before Flowers showing its online popularity.

Although KBS and Group Eight have every right to be delighted with the response, they are also worried about the copyright infringement committed by the uploaders which they can do little about. A KBS representative expressed, “We have asked Youtube to take down videos that infringes on our copyright and because its illegal. But there is a limit to the crackdown. For every video that is taken down, 2 – 3 more would be uploaded in its place.”

Some netizens are hoping that the crackdown can be stopped as the videos, some even with fan-made subtitles can go a long way in spreading Korean entertainment and culture to the rest of the world with relative ease.

KBS however expressed that there are legal and normal ways that can be taken to spread Korean culture to other parts of the world. They are not overly concern with the illegal uploads that infringes on the copyright but are highly worried that it paints a wrong picture to the rest of the world in that, Korea does not enforce proper intellectual property laws in the country.

The internet subsidaries of the 3 major Korean tv broadcasters KBSi, iMBC, SBSi have been tasked to work actively with video sharing websites to remove uploaded material deemed to have infringed on their copyright.
